The Charaka Samhita, written around 300 CE, is an old text on the subject of Ayurveda, which is a system of Hindu traditional medicine. It’s said that that Ayurveda saw that the characteristics of a child was determined by four major factors : 1.) The characteristics from the mother’s reproductive material. 2.) The characteristics from the father’s reproductive material. 3.) The diet of the pregnant mother. 4.) And the soul that enters the fetus. Although the last factor is more subjective, the rest do make complete sense. It is quite impressive that a a book from over 1000 years ago is correct on how the traits of a person are determined. It’s even more impressive that the writers of this book also realized that even the mother’s diet makes a difference in the child.
